International Labour Day 2024 Wishes and Images: International Labour Day, also known as Workers Day or May Day, is a global event that takes place annually on May 1st. It is a day dedicated to honouring the efforts and achievements of workers and the labour movement.
The origins of this day can be traced back to the late 19th century when workers in the United States organised to fight for better working conditions, shorter hours, and fair wages. It is celebrated in many countries with parades, speeches, and other events that emphasise the importance of workers and their contributions to society.
In India, the first celebration of May Day took place on May 1, 1923, after the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan initiated the event and Comrade Singaravelar led the celebrations. Comrade Singaravelar was a well-known leader of the self-respect movement in the Madras Presidency and fought for the rights of backward classes. He passed a resolution stating that the government should allow everybody a national holiday on Labour Day
